09/23/24 | Navigating the Climate Change Models

As the scope and severity of risks that the world faces due to climate change continue to rise, the need to address climate risks is becoming more urgent. Climate risk models have become essential tools for businesses, policymakers, and society to properly identify, understand and evaluate material climate-related risks. Climate modeling and computation are making advances, but there are significant challenges associated with making accurate predictions of future climate risk scenarios. This is compounded by the proliferation of climate change risk models, with an increasing number being introduced and used internationally. Against a backdrop of rising regulatory pressures, navigating the climate model landscape has introduced significant challenges for institutions, such as asset management firms, insurance companies and banks. These include, for example, the nature and type of models that are relevant for financial institutions, the transition assumptions and scenarios being used, time horizons, and the data to integrate into the modeling, to mention just a few. The event this afternoon will explore the model landscape, the key challenges associated with the various models and how to tackle these in a methodical fashion.
